She had been naive enough to think

But he was still that scared child
Hiding in the closet
With cigarette burns tattooing his arms
She made her way down the concrete steps
Wrapping her thin jacket about her
Only wincing slightly now as she began walking
And her heels made her feel every tendon in her feet
They were a gift from a friend

It wasn't then that I became aware
Songs sung or starlight and what lies beyond
Became songs of the broken and divine
Even then I didn't notice
Gradually smiles became antiquated
Replaced with avant garde heartbreak
Perhaps that was when I began to see
The weight of regretted decisions
Knitted their way across my skin
And showed the path I'd stumbled on
The better versions of myself was lost
Was lost with the innocence
I had once cherished

The kids and the teachers all they see

she stirs her pomegranate green-tea until it turns from clear to purple
setting it on her bedside table and climbing back into bed again.
her fingers follow the bluer-than-usual constellation veins on her wrists and down
to the freckle on her forearm and then the scar on the inside of her elbow
crossing the tendon as if it were crux.
and then she remembered that God hasn't been with her lately.
